Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid Of MLR

Achieving medical, legal, and regulatory (MLR) approval on scientific content is no easy task, yet it can be done! The key lies in proactive planning, involving reviewers from the start, and substantiating claims from start to finish.

At Let There Be, MLR is at the core of our creative process. Each team member—whether writer, animator, or project manager—keeps it top of mind as they create. Here’s how we do it:

It begins at the project get-go, when our project managers kick off the project with the team. Each project is different – with different brands, products, science, and review processes. All of our team members are informed on these specifics so they know what to expect during the course of the project:

Coordination is key. By involving the client’s MLR experts from the beginning stages, we streamline approvals and stay on schedule. Getting their input early on sets us up to avoid major time delays down the road and allows me to convey that to our team so everyone is on the same page
— Anna Derry, Project Manager at LTB

Once the project is kicked off, our writer begins crafting the video script. The script writer is trained to use approved claims and science whenever possible, and they substantiate from the first draft to the final draft!

From the initial draft, I ensure every statement is backed by credible sources.. I use these sources to create claim-backed narratives in our videos. This proactive approach simplifies the MLR review process greatly.
— Austin Miller, Script Writer at LTB

An Example of MLR adaptations in action during the script writing phase:

MLR Rejected:

Your strength and stamina starts at the smallest scale.

Let’s go cell deep into a muscle, where there are thousands more mitochondria than in other cells.

MLR Approved:

Your muscle strength starts at the smallest scale.

Let’s go cell deep into a muscle, where there are a lot of mitochondria.

We allow unlimited revisions, so that we can get the language right for everyone involved… medical, legal, and regulatory included!

But MLR doesn't stop after the script writing stage; our animators are well aware of the regulatory guidelines when creating complex science designs.

When I’m doing the initial design work, I work closely with our writers and project managers to ensure visuals are not only engaging but also compliant, right down to the smallest detail.
— Marie-Maxime Giguere, Animator at LTB

Getting MLR approval is hard, but not impossible. With proactive planning, involving reviewers from the start, and substantiating claims from start to finish, MLR approval can be achieved.

Have a consumer health product and want to show off the science? We're MLR pros, and we'd love to help you market your science in an approvable way.
